What it is about
You design a space mission in team collaboration from requirements to technical and cost-related decisions. In the end you will know methods for mission planning, payload analysis, launch and space segment evaluation, as well as optimization and cost estimation procedures, and you can present the results.
What you will be able to do
- Comprehensive understanding of Space Mission Design
- Analysis and evaluation of mission requirements, constraints and goals
- Application of advanced payload analysis
- Evaluation of ground, launch and space segments as well as technical trade-offs
- Estimation of life-cycle costs (analogous- and parameter-based methods)
- Conducting optimization analyses under constraints
- Effective technical communication to a broad audience
- Teamwork to achieve goals
What the module consists of
- LectureConveying concepts of Space Mission Design (e.g. Earth observation, interplanetary missions, Moon and Mars missions)
- Seminar / TeamworkGroup work on the design project and presentation sessions
Teaching method
- LecturesIntroduction and deepening of design-relevant concepts and methods
- Teamwork SessionsJoint elaboration of the mission design with support from scientific staff
- Project PresentationsPresentation and discussion of the project results
