AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You will learn to understand and pre-design advanced and unconventional aircraft concepts, including canards, blended wing bodies, strut-braced wings, oblique wings, as well as (hybrid) electrical and hydrogen propulsion architectures. In the end you will be able to systematically evaluate these concepts, design components for electrical and hydrogen systems, and assess their impacts on aerodynamics, mass, operation, and environmental footprint.

What you will be able to do

  • Integration of new system technologies (electrification, hydrogen) into the preliminary design
  • Implementation of current design methods in numerical environments
  • Application of scaling, optimization, and parameter studies
  • Design of (hybrid) electrical propulsion and hydrogen systems as well as laminar and BLI concepts
  • Quantification of economic efficiency, climate impact, and life cycle assessment for single flight and fleet

What the module consists of

  • LectureConveying theoretical foundations for advanced and numerical design methods for conventional and unconventional configurations
  • ExerciseApplication and deepening of lecture content in practical calculation tasks with a-priori given problem statements

Teaching method

  • Presentation and chalkboard workConveying the theoretical foundations
  • Script (PDF/paper)Support for self-study and reference work
  • Application examples in lectureDemonstration of implementation in numerical procedures
  • Homework problemsPractical application and deepening of the methods
