AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You deal with additive manufacturing (AM) processes and their importance for sustainable product design. In the end you will be able to compare AM and conventional manufacturing in terms of resource use and environmental impact, select sustainable materials and technologies, and design and evaluate products for AM from a sustainability perspective.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain environmental and economic problems of conventional and additive manufacturing
  • Compare AM and conventional processes with LCA principles regarding resource efficiency and environmental impact
  • Select suitable AM technologies and sustainable materials
  • Design parts for AM with a focus on lightweight construction, recycling and material efficiency
  • Evaluate the sustainability performance of a product using established LCA tools and real environmental data
  • Collaborate interdisciplinarily in a team to develop sustainable solutions for real manufacturing tasks
  • Present technical and sustainability-related project results in writing and orally

What the module consists of

  • VorlesungenDelivery of AM technologies, sustainability concepts and LCA methods
  • WorkshopsPractical application: digital design, environmental modelling, prototype planning
  • ProjektwocheCapstone project with design, poster and prototype integrating the learning content

Teaching method

  • Interaktive VorlesungenIntroduction to technologies and methods
  • Praktische WorkshopsHands-on application of design and LCA tools
  • Projektbasiertes Lernen (drei Stufen: Produktauswahl, LCA, Projektwoche)Step-by-step development of the ability to solve real, interdisciplinary tasks
