What it is about

In this module you will learn the physical fundamentals of electrical machines, in particular the description of current- and position-dependent inductances, space-vector representation, as well as the calculation of waves, forces and torques. In the end you will be able to mathematically describe the operating behavior of typical rotating machines (asynchronous and brushless/synchronous machine) and calculate torques and harmonic components.

What you will be able to do

  • Understand the physical operating mode of electromechanical transducers
  • Understand the creation and calculation of torques
  • Apply space-vector and wave descriptions
  • Calculate forces, base and harmonic components
  • Apply growth and scaling laws to machines
  • Mathematically describe the operating behavior of different machine types

What the module consists of

  • LectureConveying the theoretical fundamentals of inductances, space vectors, waves and machine types
  • Exercises / TutorialsDeepening through discussion and individual solving of tasks, simulations and example calculations

Teaching method

  • Frontal instruction (Lecture)For structured delivery of the content
  • Tutorials with exercises and discussionsFor deepening, individual problem solving and analysis of examples (also simulations)
  • Self-study with manuscript and presentationsSupplementary learning and review; exercise solutions are available online
