Components of Flight Control Systems

What it is about

You will gain a practical insight into the functions, architectures and components of modern as well as future flight control systems. In the end you will be able to describe different system types, their key components and typical fault scenarios, and explain the role of sensors, actuators, flight control computers and redundant architectures.

What you will be able to do

• describe different types of flight control systems
• name components of the Human-Machine-Interface and their influence on the human-in-the-loop
• explain purpose and application of sensors and navigation systems
• list common actuator systems and their topologies as well as failure modes
• present the functions of Flight Control Computers and the advantages/disadvantages of various architectures
• name digital communication buses and their topologies in flight controls
• describe concepts of redundancy, diversity, redundancy management and fault tolerance
• overview verification and test methods for hardware and software (e.g. DO-178C, DO-254)
