What it is about
You will learn the mathematical description of the mechanics of continuous bodies under large deformations. The module introduces kinematics, stress concepts and the corresponding balance equations of mechanics and thermodynamics and shows how macroscopic material laws (e.g. plasticity, (visco-)hyperelasticity) couple deformations and stresses. In the end you will be able to apply the theory to classify physical material behavior within nonlinear continuum mechanics.
What you will be able to do
- Handling of kinematic field quantities (displacement, velocity, acceleration, strain, distortion) as tensor fields
- Explanation of the significance of these kinematic quantities
- Understanding the differences arising from material vs. spatial configuration
- Assignment of phenomenological material behavior to continuum mechanical material laws
- Recognizing the extensibility of the concepts to independently analyze more complex models
