What it is about

In this module you will learn how bioelectrical signals (e.g., ECG) are measured, analyzed and filtered. At the end you will be able to design measurement systems, identify sources of interference and implement and evaluate targeted digital filters.

What you will be able to do

  • Write programs for signal generation and data acquisition
  • Apply principles of discrete Fourier transform and windowing
  • Record, analyze and evaluate signals (including averaging)
  • Measure and assess frequency responses and noise levels
  • Design, characterize and judge measurement systems
  • Recognize properties of biosignals and derive implications for data acquisition
  • Identify and evaluate common measurement artifacts
  • Explain the generation of the ECG
  • Describe the technical implementation of bioamplifiers
  • Create test datasets for filter evaluation
  • Distinguish and analyze artifacts in measurement signals
  • Compare filter types and classify them for ECG applications
  • Select appropriate filters for artifact removal
  • Create publication-ready graphics
  • Write legible measurement reports

What the module consists of

  • Laborpraktikum / Lab@Homeyou perform five home measurements in metrology using a loaned measurement system and document the results
  • Teamprojekte zu digitalen FilternLiterature research and presentation on filter topics with a focus on ECG
  • Teamprojekt zu EKG-ArtefaktenDevelopment, measurement (lab/patient simulator) and evaluation of filter strategies; presentation in the workshop
  • Workshops / Peer ReviewPresentation and discussion of the work results in several workshops
  • Finaler Berichtshort final report on the used filter methods

Teaching method

  • Teamarbeitwork in teams of typically three students to solve practical tasks
  • Lab@Home Messungenpractical exercises at home with a loaned measurement system to teach fundamentals of metrology
  • Labormessungen vor Ortmeasurements on various ECG systems and patient simulators to evaluate artifacts and filters
  • Workshops und Peer Reviewpresentation and collaborative discussion for deepening and feedback
  • Literaturrecherche und Präsentationfamiliarization with current research and existing implementations
  • Irreguläre Online-Treffen (Zoom)supervision and clarification of questions during execution
