What it is about
In this module you will learn how research results from cancer biology are translated into clinical applications. At the end you will be able to classify central molecular mechanisms of tumorogenesis, modern therapeutic concepts (e.g., targeted therapies, immuno-oncology, adoptive cell therapies) as well as the importance of preclinical models and personalized approaches for oncology.
What you will be able to do
- Understand fundamental properties of cancer cells
- Know mechanisms of tumor formation and progression
- Explain fundamentals of translational research in oncology
- Recognize the importance of multi-omics approaches for personalized therapy
- Understand the role of hematopoietic stem cells in cancer development
- Know concepts of immune surveillance and immune tolerance
- Assess advantages and disadvantages of various preclinical models
- Assess genetic factors and hereditary cancer risks
- Understand fundamentals and principles of immunotherapy against cancer
- Present fundamentals of genome editing with CRISPR-Cas9
- Explain the functioning of CAR-T and transgenic TCR-T therapies
- Classify the importance of the tumor microenvironment for tumor growth
- Describe mechanisms of immunogenic cell death and their therapeutic relevance
- Know principles of oncolytic virotherapy and the development of cancer vaccines
