Diagnostics of High Consequence Pathogens in Deployable Laboratories

What it is about

You learn how diagnostics of highly dangerous pathogens are conducted in mobile field laboratories. The module combines lectures, seminars, and practical exercises so that you can safely inactivate samples, perform RT‑PCR tests, and interpret results in a clinical context at the end.

What you will be able to do

• Knowledge of biology and clinical features of highly consequential pathogens
• Understanding of transmission routes and pathomechanisms
• Practical skills for scientific, medical, technical, and operational challenges in field deployment
• Safe inactivation of potentially contagious samples in a foldable glovebox
• Selection and correct application of personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Conducting and interpreting diagnostic RT‑PCR assays
• Placement of diagnostic laboratory results in a clinical context
• Handling of various sample types expected in a field laboratory
• Planning and execution of emergency response for small and medium infectious spills

• SeminarStudents prepare and deliver presentations on selected biological agents
• PraktikumTraining in a field laboratory: sample intake, safe inactivation in a glovebox, rapid tests, RNA extraction, RT‑qPCR and result interpretation
