What it is about

You will get an overview of the origin and treatment of tumors and infections as well as the action and clinical application of cytostatics, antibiotics, virostatics and antiprotozoa. You will learn how chemical structure, pharmacokinetic properties, side effects and resistance mechanisms determine the action of drugs, and you will gain insights into drug targets, current trends and computer-aided drug design (CADD) methods. In the end you will be able to analyze drug–target interactions and apply CADD methods to study and optimize drug candidates.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the physical principles of the interaction of drugs with proteins, membranes and nucleic acids
  • Describe mechanism of action, chemical structure, clinical use, side effects and pharmacokinetic aspects of important anti-neoplastic and anti-infective agents
  • Explain strategies to combat cancer cells, bacteria, viruses and protozoa at the molecular level
  • Outline principles of the pathogenesis of bacterial and protozoan infections
  • Explain the biological functions of the major classes of proteins as drug targets
  • Identify structural features of drug molecules that mediate binding and agonism/antagonism towards protein classes
  • Design/recognize structural features that target drugs to membranes and nucleic acids
  • Discuss with examples how drug–target interactions lead to therapeutic efficacy in different disease areas
  • Compare and contrast small-molecule drugs and biologics
  • Select and apply CADD methods to investigate interactions between drug and target
  • Apply CADD methods to optimize drug design
