What it is about

In this module you will learn molecular foundations and modern methods of protein chemistry, from natural and chemical protein modifications to the expansion of the genetic code and to computer-assisted protein design and development of artificial enzymes. At the end you will be able to explain these methods and concepts at the molecular level, critically discuss current research, and independently design experimental questions.

What you will be able to do

• Understand naturally occurring and synthetically introduced protein modifications at the molecular level and place them in a biological context
• Explain methods and mechanisms of genetic code expansion
• Recite the basic principles of computer-aided protein design
• Understand the development of artificial enzymes through rational design and directed evolution at the molecular level
• Critically analyze and discuss current research
• Summarize the contents of a scientific article in a concise scientific presentation
• Plan own experiments and apply the discussed methods
