What it is about
You learn how to mathematically model information transmission and storage with quantum mechanical systems. In the end you will understand the fundamental concepts and proof methods of the Shannon-theoretic description of discrete, memoryless semi-classical and quantum communication scenarios and know the corresponding coding theorems.
What you will be able to do
- Mathematical and conceptual foundations of finite quantum systems
- Operational access to quantum mechanics
- Quantum hypothesis testing and quantum Stein's Lemma
- Source coding for memoryless quantum sources
- Coding theorems for transmission of classical messages over semi-classical and quantum channels
- Advanced topics: information-theoretic security, entanglement theory, optimal protocols for resource generation
What the module consists of
- VorlesungExplanation of the mathematical and theoretical methods as well as proofs of fundamental coding theorems (blackboard lecture)
- ÜbungIndependent and supervised solving of exercises to apply the proof strategies
Teaching method
- Tafelvortragfor systematic introduction and derivation of the theoretical methods
- Übungsaufgaben mit Assistenzto practically apply the learned proof strategies and derive concrete coding theorems
