What it is about

You will learn the physical and mathematical fundamentals for the application of radioactivity in industry, research and medicine. In the end you will be able to describe and apply concepts of radiation protection, detection and shielding as well as typical medical, industrial and research-related applications of radioactive sources in simple practical tasks.

• Fundamentals of radiation and radiation protection
• Radiation source(s) and interaction with matter
• Radiation detection and measurements
• Design and application of radiation shielding
• Biological effects of ionizing radiation
• Medical applications: radiodiagnostics, radiopharmaceuticals, radiotherapy (including IMRT, brachytherapy, neutron and proton therapy)
• Industrial applications: radiation testing, radiochemistry, tracer techniques, sterilization, radioisotope batteries, polymerization
• Research: dating with nuclear methods, applications in environmental and life sciences
• Models for describing and designing reactor- or thermal behavior (basic concepts)
