What it is about

You receive a compact introduction to central concepts and methods of bioinformatics with a focus on sequence and genome analysis. By the end you will be able to apply and explain in writing basic algorithms and tools for sequence comparison, database searching, and analysis of secondary sequence information.

What you will be able to do

• Understand and reproduce fundamental concepts of bioinformatics
• Represent molecular biology fundamentals in the bioinformatic context
• Explain basics of sequence and genome analysis
• Follow data structures in the bioinformatic environment
• Apply string algorithms for sequence comparison
• Carry out and explain sequence alignments (Needleman–Wunsch, Smith–Waterman)
• Perform sequence searches in databases (FASTA, BLAST)
• Analyze secondary sequence information (patterns, weight matrices, HMMs)
• Apply and explain gene prediction in prokaryotes
