What it is about

The module conveys the chemical fundamentals of combustion and pyrolysis with a view to alternative and conventional fuels. You will learn how emissions (e.g. NOx, soot) originate and how to create, analyze and reduce reaction mechanisms, especially with tools such as RMG and CANTERA.

What you will be able to do

  • Describe the chemical relationships in the formation of emissions from combustion processes
  • Model 0D/1D reactors (well-stirred, lean premixed flat flames, counterflow flames) in CANTERA
  • Apply RMG to create simplified reaction mechanisms
  • Explain the basic idea of chemical mechanism reduction
  • Name methods for generating reduced chemical mechanisms
  • Independently perform guided exercises
  • Present results to a scientific audience
  • Collaborate in teams on questions and improve literature research

What the module consists of

  • LectureConveying the theoretical foundations (thermodynamics, transport phenomena, chemical kinetics, reaction mechanisms, NOx and soot chemistry, combustion chemistry of various fuels)
  • Guided exercises (1 SWS/week)Practical application of lecture content, programming and tool tasks, preparation of the final presentation
  • Final presentationPresentation of the exercise results to a professional audience

Teaching method

  • Guided exercisesEnable applying learned theory in practice and deepening programming/tool skills
  • Interactive lectureActive learning techniques for conveying and revising the theoretical background
  • PresentationsTraining of scientific presentation and communication of results
