AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You will learn the fundamentals and practice of wind effects on buildings: wind climate, boundary-layer flow, influence of structural properties, and the phenomenological behavior, in particular of lightweight surface structures. By the end you will be able to assess wind loads, apply common calculation approaches, and perform simple numerical simulations to evaluate static and dynamic wind effects.

What you will be able to do

  • Understand and apply normative approaches for wind loads
  • Analyze and design wind- and vibration-prone structures with consideration of aeroelastic effects
  • Classify the validity limits of wind load standards, especially for lightweight surface structures
  • Evaluate the behavior of buildings under static and dynamic wind actions
  • Assess further experimental and numerical methods

What the module consists of

  • Lecture with integrated exercisesConveying theory and practical examples
  • Computer exercises (lecture hall exercises, own laptops)Independent use of numerical tools for flow simulation
  • Semester-long group projectApplication of what has been learned to concrete questions and teamwork

Teaching method

  • Media-supported lecture (PowerPoint, videos)Explanation of theory and practical examples
  • ExercisesDeepening and application of theoretical engineering approaches
  • Computer exercisesPractical use of numerical tools and simulations
  • Provision of handouts/materialsNotes and follow-up of topics
