What it is about

You will learn numerical methods for solving linear systems of equations and the relevant fundamentals of linear algebra as well as computer arithmetic. In the end you will be able to understand number representations, evaluate matrix types and their properties, and select and apply both direct and iterative solution procedures including preconditioning to concrete problems.

What you will be able to do

  • Understand and apply number representation on the computer (integer and floating-point representation)
  • Master fundamentals of linear algebra (norms, scalar product)
  • Know matrix types, analyze conditioning and spectral radius
  • Perform convergence analysis using Banach's fixed-point theorem
  • Apply direct solution methods (Gauss, Cholesky, QR) and assess their complexity
  • Apply iterative methods (splitting, relaxation, Krylov methods, multigrid)
  • Use and assess preconditioning methods (scaling, incomplete LU/Cholesky)

What the module consists of

  • LectureContent delivery through lectures, examples, and discussion; provision of exercise sheets for self-check

Teaching method

  • Lecture with slides and blackboard/whiteboardenables presentation of the theory, illustrated by examples and supports independent deepening
  • Problem sets with solutionsserve for independent check and deepen the treated methods
