What it is about

You will learn the physical and chemical basics of water chemistry (e.g. pH, water as a solvent, acid/base and redox reactions) as well as the carbonate equilibrium and its importance for natural water systems. You will also deal with natural and anthropogenic water constituents, their fate and corrosion processes. In the end you will be able to assess redox and corrosion processes and develop simple treatment approaches for contaminated waters.

What you will be able to do

  • Understand the fundamentals of important water properties
  • Apply redox reactions
  • Evaluate corrosion processes
  • Assess organic and inorganic water contents
  • Develop initial approaches to water treatment

What the module consists of

  • VorlesungTransmission of the theoretical foundations of water chemistry; calculations are illustrated in lecture hall exercises using practical applications

Teaching method

  • VorlesungFor conveying the theoretical foundations
  • HörsaalübungenFor illustrating and performing the required calculations using practical examples
