AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You will learn population-based procedures for numerical structural optimization and how to apply them. The emphasis is on genetic and evolutionary strategies, multi-criteria optimization as well as biologically inspired methods such as Particle Swarm and Ant Colony. You will also cover Sensitivity Analysis, Design of Experiments, Response Surface Methods and Robust Design Optimisation with applications from nonlinear structural mechanics (e.g. crash). In the end you will be able to evaluate the procedures, implement them and apply them practically to engineering tasks.

What you will be able to do

  • State the most important steps of the optimization procedures discussed
  • Understand the basic ideas and motivations of the procedures
  • Apply the related mathematical methods
  • Exemplarily apply essential steps of the algorithms
  • Analyze and compare algorithms
  • Evaluate the suitability of the algorithms for concrete engineering tasks
  • Develop variants and improvements of existing algorithms

What the module consists of

  • VorlesungDelivery of content through examples and discussions; promotes independent study
  • Übung (Seminarcharakter)Processing selected application examples analytically and with software; concrete questions

Teaching method

  • Anschauliche und industrienahe BeispieleFor illustration and application of the theory
  • Diskussionen mit StudierendenPromotes understanding and critical engagement
  • Seminar/Übung mit praktischen AufgabenDeepening through working on concrete application cases and software use
  • Beispielalgorithmen (z. B. MATLAB, Python) und LiteraturFor practice, implementation and deepening of the material
