What it is about

In this module you will learn fundamental and advanced methods of damage and fracture mechanics and apply them. You will be able to competently apply different damage models (isotropic/anisotropic, brittle/ductile, fatigue, creep) as well as concepts of LEFM and EPFM (K-factors, Griffith, J-Integral, Dugdale, Irwin, HRR) and numerically model and assess them using Finite-Element Methods.

What you will be able to do

  • Name the most important models of damage and fracture mechanics
  • Understand underlying assumptions and simplifications
  • Apply continuum mechanical methods for damage modeling
  • Select and apply suitable models for LEFM and EPFM
  • Analyze mechanical models in context
  • Evaluate specialist literature
  • Evaluate implementations in software
  • Develop the best compromise between model complexity and numerical efficiency

What the module consists of

  • LectureProvision of content through small analytical and numerical application examples; discussion and deepening

Teaching method

  • Lecture with example calculationsIllustration of methods and facilitation of discussion
  • Self-study (specialist literature and industry examples)Expansion and deepening of the topics discussed by students
