What it is about
In this module you will learn laser-optical measurement techniques for determining flow quantities (in particular LDA and PIV). You will understand the relevant optical and quantum-mechanical fundamentals of light and lasers, practically apply tracer selection and measurement methods, and statistically analyze the obtained data.
What you will be able to do
- Represent properties of light waves (refraction, reflection) and quantum-mechanical phenomena (absorption, emission)
- Understand the setup and concept of lasers
- Select tracer particles for LDA and PIV
- Conduct LDA and PIV measurements
- Analyze measurement results with selected statistical procedures
- Assess the suitability of LDA and PIV for given measurement tasks
- Evaluate the quality and plausibility of measurement data
What the module consists of
- Self-Directed Group Work (online-Wiki)Development of the physical fundamentals and exchange of results with the group
- LectureDetailed conveyance of the theory of experimental methods
- Practical / Laboratory WorkGroup application of measurement methods (LDA, PIV) to flow cases and practice in conducting experiments
- Report and PresentationDocumentation and presentation of the experimental results as well as discussion and evaluation
Teaching method
- Group work with literature researchPromotes independent elaboration of the physical fundamentals and knowledge transfer via online-Wiki
- LectureConveys the theoretical foundations of the measurement methods
- Practical lab exercises in groupsSecures the ability to perform LDA and PIV measurements and standard workflows in the experiment
- Report and group presentation with discussionTrains scientific documentation, result evaluation and presentation skills
