What it is about

You will learn the fundamentals of the mechanics of unsaturated soils, such as suction, water movement and effective stress, and you will be able to assess the behavior of unsaturated soils and apply models to describe water retention, hydraulic conductivity and shear strength.

What you will be able to do

• Assess soil behavior in the unsaturated state
• Develop experimental investigations to determine soil mechanical properties
• Apply fundamentals of water movement in unsaturated soil
• Use models for the suction–water content relationship and for hydraulic conductivity
• Employ models for stress distribution and shear strength in unsaturated soils
• Evaluate geotechnical problems in unsaturated soils
