What it is about

You engage with theories of monument preservation and the question of how theory and practice of conserving built culture connect. Based on selected foundational texts and case studies you analyze historical and current positions and reflect on planning and construction interventions in the existing fabric. In the end you will be able to classify, critically discuss and assess the relevance for practice of central monument preservation theoretical positions.

What you will be able to do

• Reproduce fundamental positions and developments of monument preservation in the 20th century
• Explain historical development lines of monument preservation theoretical theories
• Identify and critically interpret central content of monument preservation theoretical texts
• Historically classify and critically analyze case studies of handling the existing fabric
• Systematically evaluate architectural practice in relation to historical and current theories
