What it is about

In this module you will become familiar with and apply various particle-based discretization methods (e.g., DEM, PFEM, SPH, MPM), particularly for modeling granular and fluid materials under extreme loading scenarios. The focus is on the Material Point Method (MPM): you will deepen its concepts, implement approaches in the provided teaching software, and validate and analyze the simulation results. In the end you will be able to derive methodological limits of classical FEM and apply particle-based methods to solve engineering questions.

What you will be able to do

  • Describe fundamentals of various particle-based discretization methods
  • Identify typical application areas of these methods
  • Explain the limits of classical FEM for large deformations and complex contact problems
  • Derive motivation for particle-based procedures
  • Acquire an in-depth understanding of the Material Point Method (MPM)
  • Independently implement the basic principles of MPM
  • Systematically validate and critically analyze simulation results
  • Develop numerical solution strategies for technical/scientific questions in team projects

What the module consists of

  • VorlesungDelivery of the theoretical foundations for particle-based methods
  • Lab SessionsFamiliarization with the provided teaching software and practical exercises
  • Betreute Projektarbeit in kleinen GruppenApplication, implementation and validation in team-oriented projects
  • Gastvorträge (optional)Insight into current research and application areas by international experts

Teaching method

  • mediengestützter Vortrag (PowerPoint, Videos)for structured conveyance of the concepts
  • Lab Sessions mit Lehrsoftwarefor learning and implementing numerical methods
  • betreute Projektarbeit in Kleingruppenfor practical application, teamwork and deepening understanding
  • Impulsvorträge internationaler Expertenfor current research perspectives and application examples
