What it is about

You will learn the fundamentals and advanced concepts of finite-element-based simulation of fluid-structure interaction (FSI). The course covers model equations, coupling strategies, discretization, solution algorithms, implementation aspects and the use of open-source software (in particular Kratos). By the end you will be able to analyze FSI problems, evaluate suitable numerical methods and software approaches, and implement your own solution approaches in the project.

What you will be able to do

  • Understanding the basic equations for structure, flow and their coupling
  • Applying the ALE description for moving meshes
  • Knowledge of spatial and temporal discretization as well as typical problems and solution approaches
  • Applying the finite-element methods to structure and flow equations
  • Recognizing different coupling approaches (embedded, body-fitted) and interface descriptions
  • Assessment and adjustment of algorithmic and software components for FSI
  • Foundations in HPC for multiphysics simulations
  • Conducting your own FSI practice task and developing a software solver in the project
