What it is about

In this practical course you work with MATLAB and learn to apply numerical methods practically. You implement simulations of discrete processes, implement explicit and implicit one-step methods for ordinary differential equations, and solve stationary as well as non-stationary partial differential equations with finite differences. In the end you can implement these methods in a numerical programming environment and assess their properties.

What you will be able to do

  • Implement numerical methods in MATLAB
  • Carry out simulations of discrete processes
  • Apply explicit and implicit one-step methods for ODEs
  • Use finite-difference methods for PDEs
  • Make results reproducible and reliable
  • Develop software prototypes in small teams
  • Discuss correctness and properties of numerical methods

What the module consists of

  • PraktikumApplication and implementation of numerical methods in MATLAB; completion of exercises in small teams
  • Self-studyDeepening of the material through literature work and preparation of exercise sheets
  • Presentation/TalksIntroduction to theoretical content by supervisors

Teaching method

  • Practical computer-lab exercisesImplementation of programming tasks and direct supervision by the instructors
  • Talks and presentationsConveying the necessary theoretical foundations
  • Teamwork in small groups (2–3 persons)Promotes the development and submission of joint software solutions
  • Homework/exercise sheetsIndependent work on and implementation of the methods
