Rationality and Choice

What it is about

You will learn central theories and debates on rationality and decision making – historical foundations, formal decision models and game-theoretic thinking as well as behavioral and contextual critique. In the end you can critically assess formal models, analyze decision processes under bounded rationality and evaluate strategic behavior in data-driven, digital contexts.

What you will be able to do

• Describe historical foundations of rationality, game theory and choice models
• Explain core concepts of rational decision theory and ecological rationality
• Analyze decision making under bounded rationality, heuristics and biases
• Critically evaluate the scope and limits of formal rationality models
• Apply concepts of ecological rationality to empirical cases
• Evaluate strategic behavior in complex social and institutional contexts, including in relation to digitalization and algorithmic decision support
