Geoinformation (ESPACE)

What it is about

You learn the basics of geoinformation: data representation of space and time, spatial analyses, and cartographic visualization. In the end you will be able to edit, analyze, design maps, and assess quality as well as appropriate data structures in desktop GIS (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, QGIS).

What you will be able to do

Describe concepts, scope and challenges of geoinformatics
Explain spatial and temporal data models and compare data structures
Evaluate quality of geodata and identify sources of error
Apply suitable spatial analysis methods
Harmonize and integrate heterogeneous geodata
Implement algorithms for map generalization
Design cartographic products (symbolization, generalization, layout)
Operate desktop GIS: data editing, analysis and visualization

Computer lab exercisesPractical implementation of lecture content, GIS introduction and analysis/visualization in ArcGIS Pro or QGIS
Submission of exercise tasksProof of practical application and receipt of feedback; prerequisite for bonus

Assessment

Written examWritten test

Written exam at the end of the semester, duration 60 minutes. No aids allowed. In the exam you must provide definitions, explain concepts, theoretically implement case studies and work on design questions. All learning goals are assessed via this exam. Additionally, you can obtain an improvement in grade by successfully submitting and passing exercise tasks (by one grade step (0.3), except from 4.3 to 4.0).
