Einführung in die Erdsystemforschung

What it is about

You will learn the fundamentals of Earth system science: structure and interactions between the Earth's interior, surface, atmosphere, oceans, cryosphere and orbital environment. You will understand global energy fluxes, geodynamic processes as well as the role of satellite data and you will be able to analyze and apply observations, data and models of selected components of the Earth system.

What you will be able to do

• Understand the basic principles of the complex Earth system
• Know the main geodynamical processes in the Earth's interior and at the surface as well as coupling mechanisms
• Understand the global energy budget
• Know the role of satellite-based observations for monitoring geodynamical processes
• Work with observational data and models of selected Earth system components
• Apply mathematical and physical concepts to selected Earth system components
• Analyze results from data and models
• Communicate scientifically with experts from various geoscience disciplines

What the module consists of

• LectureDelivery of content in two parts: A 'Outer System' (Atmosphere, Oceans, Cryosphere, Radiation Balance, Satellites) and B 'Inner System' (Earth's interior, convection, seismology, gravity and magnetic field, satellite-based measurements)
