What it is about

You learn processes, modelling approaches and strategies for prevention and warning in alpine natural hazards (e.g., avalanches, debris flows, slope movements, glacial and periglacial hazards, flooding, forest fires). By the end you can understand hazard processes, model them, develop scenarios and assess sustainable preventive and early warning strategies for mountain regions.

• Understanding scientific and applied strategies for the analysis and avoidance of alpine hazards
• Assessment of economic and social dimensions of alpine hazards
• Knowledge of processes of nivale, gravity-driven, glacial and periglacial hazards
• Understanding mechanical/physical aspects and stochastic magnitude–frequency relationships
• Application of scale-appropriate modelling approaches and assessment under environmental change
• Development of sustainable adaptation and avoidance strategies
• Evaluation of best-practice examples from different mountain regions
• Creation of realistic hazard scenarios and assessment of hazard potential
• Analysis of economic and social risks in multi-hazard scenarios
• Application of prevention and mitigation measures at different stages of the risk cycle
