What it is about

You learn the physical and mathematical foundations of orbital dynamics of artificial satellites: from ideal Keplerian motion through disturbed and controlled orbits to orbit maneuvers, mission analysis, launch and reentry. In the end you will be able to describe orbital elements, model perturbing forces, compute basic maneuvers, perform orbit determination and analyze launch/reentry processes using the rocket equation and reentry dynamics.

What you will be able to do

  • Apply mathematical and physical fundamental principles (vector calculus, differential equations, Newtonian mechanics)
  • Solve the restricted two-body problem and deal with orbital elements
  • Apply Gauss's variational equations to model perturbing and control forces
  • Classify orbits, determine orbital parameters and ground tracks
  • Design and compute basic orbital maneuvers (impulsive and continuous)
  • Solve orbit determination problems and perform preliminary design of transfer scenarios
  • Apply the rocket equation to launch procedures and analyze reentry dynamics
