Data Regulation & Law (3 ECTS)

What it is about

In this module you will learn the fundamentals of data protection law with a focus on the GDPR. You will gain an overview of terms, roles (e.g., data controllers, processors), principles, rights of data subjects, as well as obligations and enforcement mechanisms. By the end you will be able to name the central concepts and explain important legal questions and challenges in data protection.

What you will be able to do

• Recall basic concepts of data protection law
• Reflect policy, fundamental rights and the historical significance of the GDPR
• Represent material and territorial scope of the GDPR
• Differentiate roles: data subjects, controllers, joint controllers, processors
• Name fundamental data protection principles
• Explain rights of data subjects (e.g., access, deletion, objection)
• Describe obligations of controllers and processors
• Provide an overview of transfers to third countries, enforcement, liability and compensation
• Summarize knowledge of sector-specific data protection legislation and conflicts
