What it is about
You will learn in the lab to handle atomically thin 2D materials (graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, hexagonal boron nitride) as well as their assembly into heterostructures and the fabrication of simple electro-optical devices such as field-effect transistors and LEDs. In the end you will be able to manufacture such devices yourself, measure electrically and opto-electrically, and present the results in a scientific report and presentation.
What you will be able to do
- Fabrication of atomically thin 2D materials (mechanical exfoliation)
- Construction of heterostructures through dry stamping
- Electrical connection and measurement of opto-electronic characteristics
- Assessment of advantages and disadvantages of 2D materials for nanoelectronics
- Writing a short scientific report
- Presentation of scientific results
What the module consists of
- Praktikumpractical testing: own fabrication and characterization of devices
- Lehreinheit/TutorialIntroduction to 2D materials and guidance to experiments
- Schreib- und PräsentationseinheitGuidance on writing reports and presenting scientific results
Teaching method
- Laborpraktikumenables practical experience and rapid learning of device fabrication, even for beginners
- Betreuung durch Mentor*innenSupport during the conduct of experiments
- Projektarbeit im Team (einzelne Experimente/Teams von zwei)Independent work on selected experiments
- Instruktion zum wissenschaftlichen Schreiben und PräsentierenTrains documentation and presentation skills
