AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You will learn the fundamental principles of CMOS technology and how different technologies (e.g., planar MOSFETs, FDSOI, FinFET, Nanosheet) influence circuit metrics. You will also understand standard cells from an analog and digital perspective, their layout and library structure, and the influences of variability, temperature, voltage and aging on reliability and performance.

What you will be able to do

  • Understand the fundamental principles of CMOS technology
  • Know the influence of different transistor technologies on circuit metrics
  • Master the operation of standard cells from an analog and digital viewpoint
  • Assess the effects of variability, temperature and voltage on performance and reliability
  • Know important electrical transistor parameters and their influence on circuits
  • Learn the basics of layout for standard cells and the construction of standard cell libraries

What the module consists of

  • VorlesungIntroduction to concepts of CMOS technology and their relationship to analog circuits and standard cells; discussions on transistor operation and technological challenges
  • Tutorien/ÜbungenPractical exercises on transistor operation, SPICE simulations, standard cell design and layout as well as reading and discussion of scientific articles
  • AbschlussprojektFour-week project at the end of the teaching period that integrates the covered aspects; successful project execution can provide a bonus to the grade

Teaching method

  • Vorlesungen mit visuellen Hilfsmitteln (PowerPoint, Tafel)Conveying basic concepts and discussion of technical questions
  • Praktische Tutorien (Simulationen, Design, Layout)Practicing concrete skills such as SPICE simulation and standard cell design
  • Lektüre und Diskussion wissenschaftlicher PapersDeepening and critical engagement with current research results
