Coherent Optics for Communication, Security and Sensing

CIT433043Examination Performance5 ECTSEnglishsummer semesterDepartment Computer Engineering
AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You will gain an overview of building blocks of coherent optical systems (laser, modulators, fibers, receivers, DAC/ADC, DSP) and of typical distortions in fiber-based systems. You will learn to apply digital signal processing methods to compensate these distortions and you will be able to transfer the methods to data communication, quantum key distribution (QKD) and fiber-based sensing.

What you will be able to do

  • Understanding of electro-optical components in coherent systems
  • Recognizing and analyzing typical distortions in optical fibers
  • Applying DSP methods for distortion compensation
  • Implementing selected DSP methods in Python
  • System-level evaluation of fiber-based communication, security and sensing systems

What the module consists of

  • LectureConveying the fundamentals on components, distortions and DSP
  • Exercises / tutorialsDeepening through examples and practical programming tasks
  • Programming tasksImplementation of selected DSP functions in the provided framework

Teaching method

  • Presentations and blackboard explanationsTeacher-centered conveyance of theoretical foundations
  • Student-centered exercises with examplesApplication of knowledge and practical practice of DSP parts
  • Programming framework with model solutionsSupports learning and implementing the required functionalities
