Fundamentals of Energy Modelling

ED180003Examination Performance5 ECTSEnglishwinter semesterDepartment Energy and Process Engineering
AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You learn how expansion and modernization planning of power plants as well as load-flow problems in modern energy systems are formulated and solved as mathematical optimization problems. In the end you can formulate (non-)linear and mixed-integer models and apply and assess suitable solution approaches for applications such as optimal load flow or power plant deployment planning.

What you will be able to do

  • Understand the fundamentals of power plant deployment and expansion planning
  • Formulate nonlinear and linear optimization problems
  • Apply Lagrangian function and Lagrange duality
  • Utilize graph-theoretical concepts for energy systems
  • Create mixed-integer models for deployment planning
  • Select and characterize solution algorithms

What the module consists of

  • VorlesungDiscussion of problem formulations and introduction to optimization theory
  • ÜbungDeepening through exercise sheets, individual work and detailed solution steps

Teaching method

  • VorlesungConceptual transfer of solution approaches and theoretical backgrounds
  • Übungsblätter / ÜbungAcquiring the handling of concrete problems and step-by-step derivation of solutions
