AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You model, simulate and optimize optical components and complete single-channel as well as WDM communication systems with commercial photonic design software. In the end you will be able to build systems with both intensity modulation/direct detection and coherent QAM systems, evaluate effects of fibers and amplifiers, and specifically improve the link construction.

What you will be able to do

  • Create models of optical components
  • Simulate optical systems (single-channel and WDM)
  • Optimize system parameters
  • Correctly interpret simulation results

What the module consists of

  • Praktikum/LaborConducting guided simulations and experiments with the Photonic Design Software
  • Self-study (lab manual)Preparation for the lab sessions and instructions for using the software

Teaching method

  • LabormanualGuide to software operation and to the individual lab experiments; serves as preparation
  • Guided lab sessions with tutorsStudents create and run their own simulations; tutors assist with questions
