What it is about
You will learn how various semiconductor and non-volatile memory technologies work, what physical and technological limits they have, and how they are used in the memory hierarchy. In the end you will be able to assess the advantages and disadvantages of different memory solutions, explain the relevant physical fundamentals, and decide which memory technology is suitable for a given application.
What you will be able to do
- understand advanced structuring, lithography and layout techniques
- understand advanced transistor concepts (FinFET, GAA-FET, FD-SOI, MCBFET)
- evaluate economic and performance aspects of the memory hierarchy
- assess the advantages and disadvantages of different memory technologies
- select appropriate memory for an application
- know technologies for memory without additional masks
- apply metrics to evaluate different memory technologies
- evaluate the physical limits of each memory technology
- know the physical challenges of the technologies
- master the physical and technological fundamentals for semiconductor memory
- master the physical and technological fundamentals for magnetic storage
- know fundamentals on insulators, high-k materials and metal gates
- know the physics and technology of phase-change materials for data storage
- understand architecture-imposed limitations of certain memory technologies
- have an overview of current challenges in nanoelectronics
