AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You will learn the fundamentals and central problems of parallel processing on multi-core processors: motivation, potentials and typical challenges in the parallel execution of programs as well as architectural concepts such as memory hierarchy, coherence, synchronization and on-chip interconnect networks. In the end you will be able to evaluate different processor architectures and assess solution approaches for multi-core systems.

What you will be able to do

  • Know problems and solution approaches of parallel processing on multi-core processors
  • Carry out a categorization of multi-core processors
  • Apply Amdahl's law
  • Understand memory hierarchy and coherence
  • Explain synchronization mechanisms
  • Describe On-Chip Networks (NoC)
  • Assess programming models for multi-core processors
  • Evaluate architectures and their advantages/disadvantages
