AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You will learn the theory and practice of image and video compression: from information-theoretic foundations through quantization, transform- and subband coding to concrete standards such as JPEG, JPEG 2000 and H.26x/MPEG. In the end you will be able to apply fundamental bounds of lossless and lossy compression, explain modern compression techniques and assess their performance and complexity.

What you will be able to do

  • Apply selected concepts of information theory to video encoding
  • Derive fundamental bounds for lossless and lossy compression
  • Deep understanding of modern image and video compression standards
  • Evaluate why certain techniques are used in standards
  • Evaluate performance and estimate the complexity of compression schemes

What the module consists of

  • VorlesungTransmission of the theoretical foundations and standards in a teacher-centered style
  • Übungen/TutorialsDeepening and consolidation of knowledge in a student-centered form

Teaching method

  • Lehrerzentrierte Vorlesungenfor introduction and systematic imparting of the content
  • Studentenzentrierte Übungen/Tutorialsfor review, application and consolidation of knowledge
