Physical Principles of Electromagnetic Fields and Antenna Systems

EI7485Examination Performance6 ECTSEnglishsummer semesterDepartment Computer Engineering
AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You will learn the physical foundations of classical electrodynamics and their application to antennas and antenna systems. In the end you will be able to calculate fields, radiated power, receiving voltage, radiation patterns, directivity, efficiency, coupling, excitation, noise and impedance matching for wire antennas, antenna arrays and multi-antenna systems and derive multi-port models.

What you will be able to do

  • Understanding of classical electromagnetic field theory
  • Calculation of radiated power and radiation resistance of dipoles
  • Determination of antenna patterns, directivity and effective area
  • Analysis of antenna current distributions and effective antenna length
  • Theory and optimization of antenna arrays (coupling, excitation, superdirectivity)
  • Modeling of multi-antenna systems as multi-port networks
  • Evaluation of antenna noise, impedance matching and decoupling
  • Application of specialized knowledge on near-field and far-field MIMO systems

What the module consists of

  • VorlesungPresentation of the content and development of the physical and mathematical foundations

Teaching method
