What it is about
You will learn the basics and current developments in optical networks – from physical properties of optical fiber and important transmission effects to central components and to control and protection mechanisms. In the end you will be able to analyze optical networks, describe their components and operating principles, and assess planning, control, and reliability aspects.
What you will be able to do
- Know relevant components of optical networks
- Understanding of optical transmission phenomena
- Analysis of network architectures (Circuit-, Packet-, Burst- Switching)
- Routing- and Wavelength-Assignment fundamentals
- Assessment of fault tolerance and fault management
- Classification of access and control mechanisms (e.g. MPLS → GMPLS)
