What it is about

In this interdisciplinary internship you determine greenhouse gas emissions of a Munich combined heat and power plant using optical FTIR spectroscopy. You will conduct a brief field campaign, learn to operate measurement hardware, and subsequently analyze the measurements with CFD simulations to calculate emissions from concentrations.

What you will be able to do

  • Name important terms of environmental sensing and modeling
  • Understand principles of atmospheric gas transport
  • Apply fundamentals of optical gas measurement technology (FTIR)
  • Operate measurement equipment for determining gas concentrations
  • Plan and organizationally prepare measurement campaigns
  • Use CFD simulations for emission calculations
  • Analyze calculated emissions with respect to legal requirements
  • Evaluate the achievability of Munich climate targets based on real emission values

What the module consists of

  • KurzvorlesungIntroduction to optical gas measurement technology
  • Praktikum / FeldkampagneCarrying out measurements on site at the power plant and setting up the hardware
  • ComputersimulationAnalysis of the measurement results with CFD to convert concentrations to emissions
  • GruppenarbeitTeamwork in measurement, evaluation and report writing
  • AbschlusspräsentationPresentation and discussion of the results

Teaching method

  • KurzvorlesungConveying the theoretical foundations of optical gas measurement technology
  • GruppenarbeitJoint execution of measurement campaigns and evaluation
  • FeldkampagnePractical application of the measurement systems and data collection
  • ComputersimulationUse of CFD for analysis and emission calculation
  • AbschlusspräsentationScientific preparation and presentation of the results
