What it is about
You learn the basics of microfluidics, microfabrication, and experimental characterization of microfluidic systems. In the lab you fabricate microfluidic components yourself, perform measurements, and quantitatively compare the results with theoretical models.
What you will be able to do
- Apply fluid mechanics and scaling at the micrometer scale
- Select and apply methods of micro- and nanostructuring
- Plan, execute, and analytically evaluate experimental work
- Compare experimental results with theoretical models and perform error analyses
What the module consists of
- LectureConveying and discussion of the theoretical concepts of microfluidics and microfabrication
- TutorialDeepening of lecture content and collaborative solving of problems
- Practical / LabManufacture of microfluidic components (lithography) and experimental characterization
Teaching method
- Lectures and tutorials in a participatory styleFosters understanding and intuition for theory and prepares for lab work
- Lab exercises and fabrication laboratoryPractical application of fabrication methods and quantitative experiments to validate models
- Computer-assisted modeling (introduction to FEM/COMSOL)Supports the comparison between theory and experiment
