What it is about

You will carry out a series of practical laboratory experiments on switched DC-DC converters. In the end you will understand the operating principles of various DC/DC topologies, be able to calculate and wind a transformer/coil for a converter, and compare the topologies experimentally in terms of efficiency, EMI and thermal behavior.

What you will be able to do

  • safe, autonomous work in the power electronics laboratory
  • understanding the operating principles of switched DC/DC converters
  • systematic fault diagnosis in hardware
  • basics of EMI analysis of DC/DC converters
  • application of efficiency analysis concepts
  • analysis of various DC/DC topologies with regard to efficiency, cost and EMI
  • design and winding of a magnetic coil for a simple converter

What the module consists of

  • Laboratory internshipexecution of several practical experiments in groups to apply the preparatory knowledge
  • Preparation tasks / Scriptconveying the necessary theoretical knowledge and preparation before each experiment
  • Final report / term paperreview and deepening of analytical skills

Teaching method

  • detailed experimental instruction with preparation tasksconveys theoretical knowledge and checks preparation before each experiment
  • practical laboratory experiments in groups with supervisionpractically implements the self-study knowledge and enables deepening through discussion
  • written final exam / protocolsolidifies acquired knowledge and promotes analytical skills
