Advanced Methods for Measurement and Modeling of Choice Behavior

What it is about

You will learn how to measure and analyze people’s behavior toward mobility policies using surveys, stated-choice experiments, and econometric models. In the end you will be able to design your own surveys with discrete choice experiments, collect data, and analyze them with discrete choice models to derive policy-relevant conclusions.

What you will be able to do

Describe existing approaches to measuring and modeling (travel) behavior
Select and conceptualize suitable methodological approaches for concrete policy questions
Prepare, conduct, and analyze a survey and a discrete choice experiment
Analyze strengths and weaknesses of different methods under varying conditions
Derive political recommendations from surveys and models and name their limitations
Present results understandably and summarize them in a scientific report

Assessment

The module exam is a semester-long project with a final presentation. You will develop an online survey including your own designed discrete choice experiment, collect data, analyze it with discrete choice models, and document the work in a scientific report (10–15 pages). Final presentation in the course: 10 minutes. Assessment: written report 90% (40% for Phase 1, 40% for Phase 2, 20% for scientific approach), presentation 10%.
