What it is about

You will learn to plan, conduct and critically evaluate epidemiological studies. By the end you will know the most important study designs, methods to avoid bias and control for confounding, understand ethical and quality-related standards and be able to develop your own study protocol including literature search and cost/time estimation.

  • Distinguishing and evaluating epidemiological study types
  • Recognizing and analyzing bias and confounding
  • Calculation and interpretation of central epidemiological indicators
  • Classification of causes and effects of health-related events in populations
  • Critical appraisal of scientific publications
  • Understanding ethical issues and the role of research ethics committees
  • Application of ethical principles and international quality standards (e.g. GEP, informed consent)
  • Transfer of study planning and conduct to a own research question
  • Creation of a study design including literature search, analysis and ethical considerations
  • Assessment of the feasibility of a study plan in terms of time, costs and goal achievement
  • Self-organization in a research group
