AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You learn the physical fundamentals of mobile radio communications: wave propagation, multipath effects, and time- and frequency-selective characteristics. You will learn how transmitters and receivers (equalizers, diversity, MIMO, OFDMA/CDMA) compensate these effects, and you will gain insights into the physical layers of GSM, UMTS and LTE.

What you will be able to do

  • Understanding of wave propagation and its effects (path loss, shadowing, fading)
  • Analysis of time- and frequency-selective channels (delay- and Doppler-spread)
  • Calculation of error rates under the influence of noise and fading
  • Application of equalization and diversity techniques (MRC, ZF, MMSE, Viterbi)
  • Knowledge of the physical layer of UMTS and LTE as well as CDMA(A), OFDM(A), MIMO and scheduling
  • Fundamentals of channel and noise estimation

What the module consists of

  • LectureConveying the theoretical foundations and demonstrations on PC
  • Laboratory exercisesPractical deepening and hands-on experience with selected problems
  • Tutorials/Tutorial hoursSupport during laboratory exercises and personal learning

Teaching method

  • Teacher-led lecture with PC demonstrationsto convey theory and practice examples
