What it is about

The module provides fundamentals of electrochemistry and its application in fuel cells with a view to aviation applications. You will learn about different types of fuel cells, their operating principles and trade-offs, as well as aspects of scaling from cell to system. In the end you will be able to assess the suitability of fuel cell technologies for aviation and discuss essential safety, production, and application aspects of hydrogen as a fuel.

What you will be able to do

• Understand basic electrochemical concepts and apply them for estimates
• Describe and distinguish the operating principles of different fuel cell types
• Explain the advantages and disadvantages (trade-offs) of relevant fuel cells
• Name and discuss components and requirements in scaling from cell to system level
• Classify challenges and considerations for the use of fuel cells in aviation
• Know safety, production, and application aspects of hydrogen as a fuel
