Designing Strength of Metals

ED170009International Experience3 ECTSEnglishsummer semesterDepartment Materials Engineering
AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You will learn the fundamental mechanisms of dislocation dynamics and hardening in single-crystal and polycrystalline materials. Building on microscopic lattice defects and obstacles, connections to the macroscopic mechanical and thermal behavior will be derived so that you can calculate real-world questions and develop strategies to influence material behavior.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain microscopic physical mechanisms (in particular lattice defects)
  • Name obstacles for lattice defects and hardening mechanisms
  • Derive macroscopic mechanical and thermal behavior from micromechanisms
  • Calculate mechanical/thermal behavior for practically oriented problems
  • Apply empirical and theoretical models to new engineering questions

What the module consists of

  • VorlesungPresentation of the theoretical content as a basis for the module
  • Integrierte Übungsaufgabenjoint solving and discussion for calculation and application of what has been learned

Teaching method

  • Vorlesung mit PowerPoint-FolienConveying the theoretical relationships between micro- and macro levels
  • Gemeinsame ÜbungsbearbeitungPractising the calculation of mechanical and thermal material quantities and applying to examples
  • Diskussion von PraxisbeispielenTransferring knowledge to real and novel problem situations
